Our History
After 26 years in the airline industry in Hong Kong, Hans and Fransien Haan travelled the world in search of the place that would fulfil their dream of being makers of very special wines. They established their business in 1993 after purchasing 26.3 hectares of land in the Barossa Valley near Tanunda. They renovated an 1850s farmhouse – with a cottage, studio and tennis court – to create a boutique winery with a beautiful garden.
They established the Haan label, creating the Prestige and Classic ranges. The first branded wine was made in 1997 and production remains around 4500 cases per annum, with all wines being made from fruit grown on the estate.
Plantings included shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, viognier, cabernet franc, malbec and a small amount of petit verdot.
Over the years, with the assistance of various winemakers and the expertise of the vineyard manager, Robert Seelander, Haan wines has produced award-winning wines for the Australian and overseas markets. Exports have included those to the United Kingdom and parts of the EU, Japan, China and other South-East Asian markets.
In April 2017, after almost 25 years in the wine business, Hans and Fransien Haan sold the Haan Wines brand, and leased their vineyard to a Chinese/Australian syndicate. The new owners are passionate when it comes to wine and are keen to produce wines that will achieve the highest accolades and awards within the wine industry.
